History 



1877: Josef Anton Meggle leaves the Allgaeu and moves to Upper Bavaria. He is able to put his knowledge of cheese-making to use while working as a groom in Pfaffing.


1882: together with his wife, Maria, Josef Anton founds the original cheese dairy in Reitmehring. He walks barefoot to the farms to fetch milk. His wife looks after 78 pigs.


1886: Josef Anton’s brother founds a cheese-selling business near Dresden, but ruins the business by speculation. The family has to start again from scratch.


1887: Josef Anton tries his luck again and leases a farm called "Guck-Hof" in Reitmehring. He registers his cheese dairy business with the tax authorities in Attel.


1896: JA Meggle II is born. The first book-keeper is hired in the same year, followed by the first qualified cheese-maker.


1903: JA Meggle I purchases the Weberhof, which is, however, almost completely destroyed by fire. Milk and cream are now also sold in Munich thanks to a new railway line.


1912. Josef Anton Meggle I dies at the age of 55.


1913: Josef Anton II passes his tradesman’s examination to become a cheese-maker and joins the company. He recognises the first commandment of business – quality – and declares it to be his guiding principle.


The 1920s: JA Meggle II has electric power cables installed in Reitmehring. The water pumps and centrifuges can finally be run on electricity.


The 1930s: milk collection points are set up in the surrounding areas. The company now employs 30 people who process over 7000 litres of milk a day. In 1931, JA Meggle III is born.


The 1940s: the MEGGLE insemination centre is founded in 1949. Josef Anton II starts utilising whey. The first spray-drying tower is built.


The 1950s: a new butter-making plant is built. Spray towers, thickeners and drum dryers are installed. JA Meggle III, who is known as Toni, supports his father in the company.


The 1960s: Toni is appointed partner. The first moulding plant for portion butter produces 61,000 portions daily. The company achieves a turnover of around DM100m.


The 1970s: MEGGLE introduces herb butters onto the market. The company that started out as a cheese dairy becomes an increasingly export-oriented producer. The factory buildings are continually extended.


1978: Josef Anton II dies at the age of 82.


The 1980s: the waste water treatment plant goes into operation. The company now employs 820 people.


The 1990s: the herb butter baguettes exceed all expectations. Toni Meggle appears in a TV commercial with Marilyn Monroe, who confesses: “I am a Gour-Meggle.â€


2000: MEGGLE starts the new millennium by making major investments. A hi-tech MSD tower for the dry products goes into operation.


2002: the company is restructured: MEGGLE AG becomes a management and financial holding company with Toni Meggle in the role of Chairman of the Board.


2005: the new Pharma Tower is put into operation. It increases capacity for the manufacture of pharmaceutical excipients.


2006: on the occasion of his 75th birthday, Toni Meggle invites his staff, partners and friends to celebrate at Gut Immling. He is awarded honorary citizenship of the town of Wasserburg.
